One summer afternoon when i was about (10) years old, I sat on the bank of the farm pond, daydreaming and listening to a red winged blackbird sing. While Dad fixed the door of the corncrib the wind had torn off, Sunny, our Australian Shepard, plunged into the water in front of me. Barking and biting at the sparkling droplets that splashed in front of his face, he swam toward a flock of Canada geese, herding them along as they honked and flapped their wings.
About twenty feet from the bank, the geese seemed to realize they had Sunny outnumbered. They did an about-face, honking loudly with their necks out-stretched, and swam after Sunny. He headed back toward me, with a wide-eyed look of panic. He churned the water with his front legs.
By that time, the commotion had caught Dad’s attention. “You better help Sunny!” he yelled. “Geese are mean as the devil. They can drown a dog.”
A couple of the geese pecked at Sunny’s skinny, black tail. The rest honked and flapped their wings. I picked up a rock and threw it at the flock. I waded into the water yelling at the birds. Sunny swam past me as if he was spooked by the devil, and the geese stopped. Yelping like the pup he was, he splashed out onto the bank. Without taking time to shake off the water, he high-tailed it for the house.
Dad and I laughed so hard we could hardly stand up.
“What’s goin’ on out there?” Mom yelled, walking out the back door.
I ran to the house and told Mom what happened. She got so tickled, she sat on the back step and laughed, too. The geese were still honking in the background as Sunny walked up to me. I patted his head. He waged his tail, licked my hand, and shook the water off his coat. Sunny lived to be fifteen years old and went with us on many a coon hunt. Never again did he make the mistake of diving into the pond to swim after a flock of geese.
